Sports FTW: How Sports Brands Nurture Fan-Based Communities (For the Win!)

1:10 pm - 1:50 pm
Hosted By SMWi Toronto

Sports fans live and die with each day’s score. And that poses special challenges for the people who oversee team social media channels. Our panelists have worked at the intersection of sports and social, with the Raptors, Leafs, MLSE and amateur sport at the Canadian Olympic Committee. They’ll share their own triumphs and heartbreaks – and how their experiences apply to other brands.

Sophia Jurksztowicz (Moderator)

Sophia Jurksztowicz joined the NHL on Sportsnet broadcast team in September 2014. A regular fixture on Hockey Night in Canada and Hockey Central, Jurksztowicz reports on up-to-the-minute social media trends and provides in-studio NHL news updates on marquee game nights.

In addition to her work on Sportsnet’s NHL broadcasts, Jurksztowicz also hosts Sportsnet’s Gotta See It, an original highlight show dedicated to showcasing the best plays and misplays across the world of sports.

Jurksztowicz began her career interning at Talk Radio AM640, followed by the theScore in 2008. Following her graduation from Ryerson University with a diploma in Radio and Teleivision Arts in 2010, Jurksztowicz joined theScore full-time working behind-the-scenes before stepping in front of the camera as a reporter and host. Transitioning to Sportsnet in 2013, Jurksztowicz continued her work with live sports updates and regularly contributed to City Toronto’s sport coverage before formally joining the NHL on Sportsnet broadcast team in 2014.

When not working the studio, the Toronto native splits her time between studying Spanish (she’s already fluent in English, French and Polish!) and enjoying the great outdoors through hiking, cycling and playing tennis.

Asif Hossain

Asif Hossain is the digital content manager for the Canadian Olympic Committee. He helped lead Team Canada’s digital executions at Sochi 2014 and TO2015 and will do the same at Rio 2016. Asif’s sports career started in 2006 at MLSE in sales before becoming Toronto FC’s first community manager from 2009 to 2013.

Matthew Iaboni

Matt Iaboni has worked in digital marketing at MLSE for the past 10 years. He is currently the Digital Manger for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies.

Jay Satur

Jay Satur has a decade of experience talking sports in digital spaces. His career began in journalism, writing for CBC Sports before moving to MLSE for seven years as a web producer and community manager for the Raptors. Jay is now at Anomaly, where he crafts and executes digital/social strategy for brands like Nike, Budweiser and Spotify.
