The Future of Media in a Multi-Platform World, Presented by CBC Toronto

11:45 am - 12:30 pm
Hosted By CBC Toronto

In a continuously changing content landscape, CBC has evolved from traditional broadcast channels like television and radio into a multi-platform brand. As Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC has had to pivot to respond to increasingly digital and mobile audiences.

Known as one of the leading digital news executives in Canada, Marissa Nelson, head of the Ontario region at CBC, will discuss how CBC Toronto is adapting to succeed in the digital age. In her role, Marissa is responsible for setting CBC Ontario’s strategic direction for TV, radio and digital. Her region encompasses eight stations, including the nation’s capital, Ottawa and the largest city, Toronto. (Link to cbc.ca/toronto)

She has focused her career on helping legacy media companies re-imagine themselves for the digital age. Before her current role, she was the Senior Director of digital for CBC News and Centres, responsible for all of the network and regional digital properties and products. She started at CBC News as the Managing Editor for CBC’s main network site, CBCNews.ca – the most visited news property in Canada.

Before CBC, Marissa was the Senior Editor of the Toronto Star’s digital properties. She also worked at several other large daily newspapers. She has an arts degree from Queen’s University and journalism degree from Ryerson University.

CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada’s national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions. We are Canada’s trusted source of news, information and Canadian entertainment. Deeply rooted in communities all across the country, CBC/Radio-Canada offers diverse content in English, French and eight aboriginal languages. We also provide international news and information from a uniquely Canadian perspective.

A space for us all is CBC/Radio-Canada’s new strategy to modernize the public broadcaster and ensure that it continues to fulfill its mandate for Canadians and for future generations. Through to 2020, it will increase its investment in prime time television programming, and continue to create radio programs of the highest quality, while promoting the development of digital and mobile platforms and content.
